I also had trouble with newer smoke detectors after a few years. Their alpha particle reach an emission level to low to detect. So I imagine that dust would cause interference as well. Many other things block alpha particles (namely your own skin). Smoke or CO particles block the alpha particle stream and cause it to beep in alarm.
